Fix it nowEight steps

  1. Stop eating the suspected food; keep others from eating it.Prevent another exposure.
  2. Never make yourself vomit.Induced vomiting is unsafe after suspected poisoning.
  3. For mild illness, take frequent small sips of oral rehydration solution.Replace lost water and salts; follow package directions.
The other five steps
  1. For children, use oral rehydration solution; ask their doctor for guidance.Children dehydrate quickly; continue infants' usual breast milk or formula.
  2. Resume your usual food when your appetite returns. You do not need to wait for diarrhea to stop.
  3. Avoid diarrhea medicines with fever or blood; consult doctors for children. These medicines can be unsafe in these situations.
  4. Monitor temperature, urination, and whether you can keep fluids down.Changes help identify dehydration or worsening illness.
  5. Wash hands with soap and water before handling food.Germs from vomit or stool can spread to food.
