The garage door won't open or close
Safety first
- Stop pressing buttons. Keep people and pets away from the door.
- Never pull the release cord while the door is open.
- Do not force the door or touch springs and cables.
Fix it nowEight steps
- Look from a safe distance; check the stop signs below before testing.Damaged hardware can let the door fall.
- With everyone clear, briefly press the wall button once; watch from beside doorway.Normal operation points toward a remote problem.
- If wall operation works, disable electronic lock mode following the opener manual.Lock mode can block remote commands.
The other five steps
- Replace the remote battery with its specified type; match polarity.A weak battery prevents the remote transmitting.
- Remove loose obstructions reachable from beside the doorway; never reach underneath.Objects can interrupt the sensor beam or door travel.
- Wipe both floor-level sensor lenses gently with a clean, soft cloth.Dirty lenses can interfere with sensor operation.
- Align sensors following the manual; adjust only sensor mounts, never track hardware.Correct alignment restores a steady sensor signal.
- Retest once with everyone clear. If unresolved, stop; call a garage-door professional.Never bypass sensors or increase closing force.
When to stop
Stop and get a garage door technician if:
- Someone is pinned or trapped: call 911 immediately; do not attempt hardware repairs.
- A spring has a gap, a cable hangs loose, or you heard a loud bang: stop; call a garage-door professional.
- Door hangs crooked, a roller leaves its track, or hardware bends: keep away; call a garage-door professional.
- Door grinds, binds, drops, or repeatedly reverses after clearing obstructions: stop; call a garage-door professional.
- Sensors remain dark or flickering, or closing requires holding the button: stop; never bypass sensors; call a garage-door professional.
